  1. Cohabitation

    • No matter how long a couple lives together California does not recognize cohabiting couples as being married, according to nolo.com. Even if couples take the same name California will not accept the union as a marriage.

    California Marriage Law

    • California recognizes traditional marriage and requires a blood test before a marriage license can be granted. Once a marriage license is issued is it good for 90 days and can be used immediately.

    Domestic Partners

    • Domestic partner status is recognized in California. Although the federal government refuses to recognize domestic partners, California granted domestic partners all the rights married couples have in regard to state law.
