Georgia Firearms Law Enforcement Training

The minimum standards required for law enforcement officers to complete firearms training are established by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (POST).

  1. Training

    • The POST website explains that each law enforcement officer appointed or employed in the state of Georgia must complete a basic training course designed for the specific position he is to fill. All firearms training must be administered by an instructor qualified under POST regulations.

    Requalification

    • On Jan 1, 2006 POST introduced new regulations that requires each law enforcement agency employee in the state of Georgia to complete an annual firearms course. This course must be completed with the weapon used by the officer while on duty, and include at least one hour of training in each department's deadly force policy.

    Federal

    • The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) is located in Glynco, Georgia, and offers law enforcement firearms training for agencies throughout the United States. FLETC explains that firearms training includes safe handling, and justifiable use of a firearm, to all law enforcement personnel.
