How Do I Teach Ecosystems to Third Grade?

Teach children about ecosystems through a variety of approaches.

If variety is the spice of life, education should be extra spicy. Teaching third graders about the different ecosystems requires the use of more than one teaching method. The three most common learning styles are visual, kinesthetic and auditory.

  1. Visual Methods

    • Visual learners will learn about ecosystems when presented with visual materials. Photographs and written materials will allow children who are strong visual learners to make a good connection with the subject. Third-grade visual learners will be able to write short reports about each ecosystem if you provide them with a template.

    Kinesthetic Methods

    • Your kinesthetic students learn better while moving. Teach the ecosystems by taking field trips to local ecosystems. Let the children perform short skits about the ecosystems. Third-grade kinesthetic learners will be able to act out the life of an animal in its own ecosystem.

    Auditory Methods

    • Auditory students learn best by hearing the information. Listen to CDs or watch videos about the different ecosystems. Third-grade auditory learners will be able to give a short oral report on ecosystems.
