Avira Antivirus

Avira AntiVir is an anti-virus program known for its high detection rate of malware. It has two editions: Avira AntiVir Personal and Avira AntiVir Premium. The latter, as of 2010, retails for $26.88.

  1. Features

    • Avira protects against viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and rootkits--sophisticed programs that hide within system files. It also detects as-yet unidentified malware applications based on their behavioral program. Its GenericRepair tool automatically repairs damage caused by malicious programs and files.

    Expert Insight

    • The CNET website, in a 2010 reviews of Avira AntiVir Personal, notes that the program remains "near the top of independent antivirus efficacy tests." Both CNET and PCWorld, however, said that users of Avira AntiVir Personal may be put off by pop-up ads and a complex interface.

    Considerations

    • Avira AntiVir Personal offers basic protection and is free to noncommercial users. Avira AntiVir Premium has advanced features, including email protection, parental controls and a bootable rescue CD. These features are not offered in the free edition.
