UV Ink Safety

Ultraviolet (UV) ink refers to a type of tattoo ink that produces tattoos visible only under black light. Although these tattoos create eye-catching effects, concerns remain about the safety of UV ink. Does this Spark an idea?

    • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved UV tattoo ink or any other type of tattoo ink for injection in human skin, according to the FDA website. As of 2010, it has not been determined how tattoo ink breaks down in the body and whether tattoos cause long-term health risks.

    Risks

    • UV tattoo ink has caused blisters, rashes and infections in some people, according to Tattoo Health. Tattoos can also cause allergic reactions, scarring and complications during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests, according to the FDA. In addition, diseases such as hepatitis can be transferred through dirty needles.

    Misconceptions

    • Some UV ink manufacturers may advertise their product as FDA-approved. UV ink is FDA-approved for use in agriculture and fishing, but it is not approved for use in humans.
