How Do CDMA Mobile Phones Work?

CDMA mobile phones use a technology called Code Division Multiple Access. Originally developed for the military, CDMA is efficient and secure form of radio communication.

Basic Technology

CDMA uses radio waves to transmit noise signals. CDMA is different from standard radio communication in that it uses a broad spectrum of radio waves. Also, signals are sent on channels that are randomized digitally. This makes CDMA signals more resistant to interference.

Communication

Radio waves for CDMA mobile phones are transmitted through a network of receiver and transmitter towers. This method is known as a cell system and is common to all major mobile phone networks.

Current Application

CDMA has become the mobile phone industry standard for 3G wireless networks. The wider bandwidth of the technology allows better quality Internet access and facsimile capabilities.
