Infrared Sauna Benefits & Risks

Infrared Sauna Benefits & Risks thumbnail
While providing benefits, saunas do have some associated health risks

A traditional sauna is a steam bath produced by pouring water over hot stones. Once associated with Europe, saunas now are found throughout the world in settings ranging from homes to health spas and fitness centers. A newer version of sauna uses infrared radiant heat. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Defined

    • Infrared saunas heat objects rather than air; this helps prevent the stuffy feeling of sitting in a small room surrounded by extremely hot air. In theory, infrared saunas that heat the body are more effective at producing sweat than traditional units.

    Benefits

    • Sauna users may rid their bodies of toxins, gain relief from sore muscles and stiff or aching limbs, and achieve a general state of relaxation. Because the air temperature in an infrared sauna is not as high as that in a traditional sauna, users may extend their sessions.

    Risks

    • People with heart-related medical conditions, such as unstable angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and severe aortic stenosis, should avoid saunas. Those with atopic dermatitis may experience itchy skin. While saunas are considered safe during uncomplicated pregnancies of healthy women, caution is recommended for an unhealthy pregnant woman or a woman experiencing a complicated pregnancy.
