Wilton decorating tips turn cake makers into artists with buttercream icing. Whether you're an amateur or professional, the tips can help you create many different shapes and effects as you decorate your cake.
Wilton decorating tips are small metal cones that attach to bags filled with buttercream icing. When a cake decorator squeezes the bag, pushing icing through the tip, it emerges in the shape or style the tip is designed to produce. Tips are stamped with identifying numbers, which Wilton uses in its cake decorating instructions.
Various Wilton tips can create straight lines, both narrow and wide; stars; leaves and flowers; rosettes and roses; shells; and other decorative shapes. Each type of tip comes in different sizes to produce, for example, either a large leaf or a small leaf. Some tips work best for borders, and others for filling in large areas. Inexperienced decorators will find advice and help, plus project ideas, on the Wilton website.
The decorating tips, made of nickel-plated brass, will not rust. After each use, wash them in hot, soapy water. The hot water should melt any buttercream icing on the tip, but if some remains, a small brush can be used to remove it. The tips can be air- or towel-dried. Wilton suggests storing the tips on pegs to keep them from being bent.
