Types
-
Choose grass seed most commonly grown in your specific area for best results. Some examples of grass seeds include Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and fine fescue. Check with your gardening center for help in selecting the best grass seed.
When
-
Plant grass seed in the fall since grass seed needs cooler temperatures and more moist conditions to properly set and grow. When planting in the spring, start as soon as the ground is workable to allow enough time for the roots to become established before the hot weather arrives.
-
How
-
Plant grass seed with a seed spreader and allow 4 lbs. of grass seed per 1,000 square feet. For maximum coverage, sow half of the seeds in one direction and then sow the other half crosswise over the first seeds. Carefully rake out after planting the seeds and then use a roller to gently firm over the seeds.
Care
-
Provide about 2 inches of water daily in the early morning, being careful not to wash out the seeds. Adequate water is essential for proper germination and root development. Add a 1-inch layer of straw mulch to retain moisture in the soil, hold the seeds in place while they are germinating and control weeds.
