What Grass Seed Is Right for Me?
Homeowners may spend time researching the type of grass to grow, but all seed of that variety at the local garden center may not be equal. Choose the right seed to buy and the right variety to plant. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Start Right
-
Check with local agricultural extensions or master gardener programs for recommendations on turf grass types and good sources.
Merchants
-
Buy from a reputable merchant with a proven history who can knowledgeably discuss local climate and soil types. Ask about warranties on "house blends" or bulk seed supplies where old and new seed may mix.
-
Labels
-
All seed, particularly bulk seed, should carry a label listing the percentage of pure seed, specific varieties included, germination rates for and origin of each variety. Labels also should list percentages of inert matter, weed seeds, lot number and date of testing.
Considerations
-
Buy seed grown in your climate area with high germination rates. Germination rates drop each season the seed sits in a bag; testing dates should be within the last nine months.
Costs
-
Buy the best, freshest seed possible. Bargain or vaguely labeled "miracle" seeds can result in the need to re-seed a patchy or weed-filled lawn.
