How to Compare OSB Plywood Sheathing

How to Compare OSB Plywood Sheathing thumbnail
OSB panels provide structural integrity and protection from the elements.

Oriented strand board (OSB) is a manufactured wood product that takes chips of wood and presses them together mixed with an adhesive and a coating to limit moisture absorption. OSB panels can be manufactured to larger dimensions if needed. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • OSB can be identified by the multiple strands or chips of wood visible on the surface and throughout the board. This is in comparison to plywood which has multiple plys of wood pressed together.

    Types

    • OSB panels come in varied thicknesses. The panels that are available for subflooring have a tongue and groove so the flooring can be locked together.

    Uses

    • OSB is used for exterior walls, roof sheathing and thicker panels are used for flooring. Most flooring panels also have a greater resistance to moisture.

    Comparisons

    • OSB compared to plywood is more economical by several dollars per sheet. OSB has greater strength when compared to plywood shear. The main disadvantage to OSB is the edge expansion experienced when the board's edge is exposed to moisture.

    Warning

    • As with anything, there are inferior and superior products available. Consumers need to look at moisture variances as well as structural integrity of the panels to determine which best suits their needs.
