Bus Travel in Scotland

Bus Travel in Scotland thumbnail
Traveling by bus in Scotland enables you to take in the countryside.

Bus travel is one of the easiest and most economical ways to travel around Scotland. When traveling by bus, you will be able to watch the Scottish countryside pass in comfort and safety.

  1. Types

    • When traveling between cities in Scotland, the major carrier is Citylink, which operates many and frequent routes and has ticket booths in most bus stations. Megabus is a budget alternative; you must buy tickets online or by phone. Most sizable cities have local bus systems that run on varied schedules. Check schedules at individual bus stops.

    Frequency

    • Between the major cities in Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Stirling, bus service is regular. In the winter and early spring, buses to the popular Isle of Skye are quite limited; check schedules to ensure that a route will be available.

    Considerations

    • When riding buses for short distances, ask waiting passengers about alternative routes on local buses. Although the Scottish Citylink and Megabus services will often drop passengers at small towns along their route, prices are often double the rate of the local service.
