Minnesota's Cooperative Housing Resources coalition offers older adults a wide range of affordable housing options, which can include multifamily, single-family, town house and mobile home choices. Residents own equity in their dwellings, and often have access to amenities such as community rooms, exercise programs and laundry facilities.

Senior citizens' cooperatives do require an initial investment, but several financing methods and sources of help are available. Choices include HUD-insured loans, "share loans" that are secured by a member's equity, traditional loans and assistance from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Services offered vary from co-op to co-op, based on residents' needs and choices. They often include meal delivery, van transportation, shopping assistance, home maintenance and social activities. If personal care is needed, it is arranged on an individual basis from outside providers for additional fees.

Accessible Space, a nonprofit formed in Minnesota in 1978, offers a 24-hour care model to seniors and the handicapped in its affordable, custom-built properties, with many different locations around the state. Features include lowered kitchen counters and sinks, roll-under stoves, widened doorways, wheel-in showers and raised electrical outlets.
