The more RAM your computer has, the faster it will operate.

Your computer will not boot without having memory, or RAM, installed in the motherboard. An attempt to boot your computer without any RAM installed will likely result in a series of beeps from your computer and a failure to boot.

  1. Importance of RAM

    • Upon turning on your computer certain boot instructions are loaded into the RAM, allowing your system to start up. Once booted, data you access is stored in your RAM for the duration of your computer session; this minimizes the number of times your computer must access the hard drive, and helps your computer run faster.

    Troubleshooting RAM

    • In the event that your computer has RAM installed but is not starting up, make sure that your RAM is firmly seated in your motherboard; to do this you will have to open up your computer to access the components. If re-seating your RAM does not fix your booting issues, the RAM may be bad, or may not be the problem.

    Installing RAM

    • Make sure that you're purchasing the right kind of RAM for your motherboard---modern motherboards typically use either DDR, DDR2, or DDR3. The old RAM sticks will have clips at each end of their seating that will need to be pulled opened before removing the old RAM. Seat the new RAM firmly, but do not force it.
