How Far to Trim Back a Hibiscus Plant?

How Far to Trim Back a Hibiscus Plant? thumbnail
Hibiscus plants respond well to heavy pruning.

Most types of hibiscus are frost-tender tropical shrubs. The hardy hibiscus or Rose of Sharon tolerates cold, however, and is grown as a hedge in northern areas of the United States. You can trim all hibiscus fairly severely. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tropical Hibiscus

    • You can trim a tropical hibiscus to a size and shape that fits your landscape. Prune up to a third of the plant, but trim all damaged or diseased branches back to the main stem. Favor the strongest, largest branches, making sure to leave two to three growing nodes on each.

    Hardy Hibiscus

    • You can trim off up to one third of a hardy hibiscus plant. The plant will respond best and bloom more the following summer if you leave at least two or three nodes on each branch. These are "bumps" on the plant's stem where new growth will emerge.

    Frost-Damaged Hibiscus

    • When frost damages your hibiscus, wait until after your final spring frost to cut all affected branches back to green, living wood. Check for green wood by scratching off a bit of bark. When you determine its location, trim the branch above the nearest node.
