Oregon Shiitake Mushroom Hunting

Shiitake mushrooms generally grow on logs.

Shiitake mushrooms easily grow in certain areas of the United States such as Oregon, and are often eaten in Asian dishes. The mushrooms are grown commercially, but can still be found if mushroom hunters know where to find the mushrooms and what to look for.

Identification

Shiitake mushrooms are easily identified by their smooth brown caps and thin stems. They appear similar to mushrooms found in most grocery stores, but are significantly larger.

Location

The hardwood forests in Oregon are ideal locations for hunting shiitake mushrooms. The mushrooms are generally found growing on logs, and if a few are found, there are likely even more in the area.

Harvesting

To harvest the mushrooms, identify the stem of the mushroom and gently twist the stem, rather than just ripping the mushroom from the stump. The best time to look for shiitake mushrooms is 24 to 48 hours after a rain storm when the mushrooms are most vibrant.

Considerations
