What Makes a Good Air Compressor?

What Makes a Good Air Compressor? thumbnail
As their name suggests, air compressors compress a tank of air.

Air compressors, while all serving the same basic function, aren't all created equally. Before purchasing your next compressor, it's important to understand what qualities to look for when comparing models, though what you consider "good" will vary based on your needs. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tank Size

    • Look at tank size. You'll want a large tank for continual or frequent use but if you're looking for an air compressor you can transport, consider a smaller model.

    Single- and Two-Stage Compressors

    • Air compressors use pistons to compress the air and send it to the storage tank. A single-stage compressor does the whole process with one piston while a two-stage compressor separates the air compression between the two pistons. Two-stage models are ideal for shop environments or other places with continuous or frequent use, according to 360 Machine Tools.

    Oil-less Compression

    • In traditional air compressors, oil is required to keep the pistons that compress the air well-lubricated. Oil-less air compressors, however, have Teflon-lined pistons that require no oil. With this type of compressor, there's no risk of oil getting into the compression tank, and they're easier to maintain.
