Security & Law Enforcement Weapons Training
Security officers are eligible to train in the proper use of law enforcement weapons including firearms and batons. Security guards frequently acquire training in the use of firearms, the most common law enforcement weapon.
-
Features
-
Security officers who seek an armed license through their state security board must complete training in the use of a firearm. Training includes classroom and range instruction in handgun safety, and criminal law and procedure. Baton certification classes include training in baton grip and how to carry a baton and usually last eight hours.
Considerations
-
Companies that train individuals in the operation of law enforcement weapons prefer that students be currently employed in the law enforcement field, such as security or corrections.
-
Fees
-
Since companies set the fees for firearm and baton training, there is no standard price. In September 2010, baton training in San Diego, California, costs $150. Armed guard licensing training in Memphis, Tennessee, costs $125.
Warning
-
Even though an individual possesses the appropriate training to carry a weapon, he may not be authorized to use it while on patrol. Security guards, for example, are allowed to train in the use of a baton. However, the guard must abide by company policy regarding the use of a baton in the workplace.
