What Is an SAE Theater?

What Is an SAE Theater? thumbnail
SAE was a leading company for audiophiles that produced home theaters since the late 1970s.

Recreating that "movie theater" sound and atmosphere in one's home begins with a quality sound system and a level of expertise and research. Scientific Audio Electronics (SAE) no longer exists as a free-standing entity in the United States. But there are other corporations, such as Amplifier Technologies, Inc. (ATI), that have modeled their businesses after SAE.

  1. SAE Then...

    • According to the Home Theater Review, SAE was initially a Los Angeles-based corporation, specializing in the dynamics of audio sound systems for the audiophile. SAE was an effective presence in the world of electronics during the late 1970s and into the 1980s, when it was sold. In the 1990s, it underwent bankruptcy.

    SAE Now...

    • According to WardsWeb, Morris Kessler (an original SAE co-owner), currently owns ATI. Morris has assumed the SAE name and logo, and is re-branding the ATI line using the SAE model. Advertising of ATI/SAE to date, has primarily been in Europe due to ATI's minimal popularity in that particular region. In this regard, SAE is undergoing a reincarnation or resurrection of sorts, to cater to the modern day audiophile.

    SAE Theaters

    • An SAE home theater can be very costly, ranging in the thousands. A consumer can personally piece together a system at his or her leisure, or hire an SAE technician to tailor-make a package exclusively for him or her. The former is the most cost-efficient way of acquiring an SAE system, as they tend to feature several costly components (speakers, television, mixers, etc.).
