Offender Tracking Information Systems
In recent years, law enforcement agencies have provided enhanced community safety in a number of ways. One method is through offender tracking information systems. These provide the public with information on any criminal who has committed a crime.

History
-
The federal government first enacted legislation to track sex offenders in 1996. In July 1994, a convicted sex offender moved into Megan Kanka's neighborhood. He beat, raped and killed her, so her parents successfully petitioned the federal government to pass laws preventing further tragedies of this type.
Types
-
Types of offenders vary between jurisdictions but can include probationers, parolees and current prisoners or jail inmates. Sex offenders are monitored very closely and the public has access to their addresses due to Megan's Law. States determine the specific disclosures regarding sex offenders.

Information

Michigan also offers a specific offender tracking information system which includes the following information: offender number, full name, gender, birth date, race, facility location and status. However, the state does not provide continually updated information, especially regarding released offenders.
