CompTIA's A+ certification is one of the most popular and well-recognized certifications in the computer hardware industry. Understanding the certification exam's expectations and grading criteria is integral for success on the exam.

  1. Format

    • The A+ certification process consists of two exams, A+ Essentials and A+ Practical Application. Both exams consist of 100 multiple-choice questions and last 90 minutes. The scoring range for each exam is 100 to 900. For A+ Essentials, a passing score is 675. For A+ Essentials, a passing score is 700.

    A+ Essentials

    • For the A+ Essentials exam, the majority of the 900 total points are distributed between the areas of hardware, troubleshooting, and operating systems and software (comprising 27 percent, 20 percent, and 20 percent of the test, respectively). Networking ranks as the next highly-weighted section, with 15 percent of the total points. Finally, operational procedure and security complete the exam with 10 percent and 8 percent of the points, respectively.

    A+ Practical Application

    • Scoring of the A+ Practical Application Exam is broken down into only four sections. Hardware and operating systems are the most prominent, with 38 percent and 34 percent of the total points falling under these categories. Networking (15 percent) and security (13 percent) round out the exam.
