The Bureau of Labor Law Compliance regulates employment laws in Pennsylvania.

The Bureau of Labor Law Compliance develops regulations, conducts inspections, processes licenses and certificates, promotes public education and prosecutes violations of Pennsylvania labor law when they can't be corrected administratively.

  1. Minimum Wage

    • As of September, 2010, Pennsylvania law requires employers to pay a minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. An employer can pay $2.83 per hour to someone who earns $30 per month in tips. However, employers must make up the difference if the tips and wages don't add up to the minimum wage.

    Equal Pay

    • An employer can't discriminate by paying fewer wages to one employee than another employee of the opposite sex for work that requires equal skills and is performed under equal conditions.

    Minors

    • Pennsylvania has extensive labor laws to protect the health and safety of minors who work. These laws prohibit minors from working in certain occupations, restrict hours of work and regulate conditions of employment. More information can be found in LLC-5, Abstract of the Child Labor Law, which is posted on the Pennsylvania Department of Labor's website.

    Record Inspection

    • Employees have a right to inspect their own personnel files.

    Overtime

    • Pennsylvania law forbids health care companies from requiring employees who receive an hourly wage for their work in direct patient care, or clinical care services, to work more than their agreed work shifts.

    Mandatory Postings

    • Employers are required to post certain notices at their work site so employees have access to information about labor laws. A list of required postings can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Labor's website.
