What is a Bilateral Mammogram?

Breast care is important to a woman's overall health.

A mammogram is a procedure done by a trained health care expert, usually a radiologic technologist, using a low-dose X-ray to take pictures of the inside of a woman's breasts. Mammograms can detect breast lumps not felt during a clinical or self exam, and can offer a better look at lumps that have been detected through these methods.

Bilateral Mammogram

A bilateral mammogram is a mammogram of both breasts, usually done separately.

Procedure

During a mammogram, you will be asked to remain still, and maybe even hold your breath for a few seconds, as each breast is placed into the mammography unit. Each breast is then compressed by two plates so all the tissue, including small abnormalities, can be seen in the image. You will be asked to change positions so different sides of your breasts can be imaged. The process usually takes about 30 minutes.

Frequency

Mammograms are a good way to detect breast cancer early and a yearly monogram is recommended for women ages 40 and older. Women younger than 40-years-old should ensure their doctor performs a clinical breast exam at least every three years, and they should be performing self breast exams frequently.
