What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Americans now spend more than $12 billion annually on veterinary care, according to the American Pet Products Association. As a result, pet insurance has come into greater focus. The major pet insurers offer a variety of plans, from basic to more complicated care coverage, with premiums priced accordingly.

  1. Accidents

    • Accident-only plans typically are the least expensive. Broken bones and lacerations are common among four-legged pets, and accident-only plans should cover care for these events. These plans also should provide coverage for surgeries and follow-up care related to swallowed objects.

    Illnesses

    • A basic pet plan should cover illnesses, but some do not extend that coverage to major events such as cancer or diabetes. If you own a breed of dog or cat susceptible to such diseases, and you should research pet insurance plans carefully to make sure your pet's specific needs are covered.

    Routine Care

    • Some pet insurers offer plans that cover routine care, including annual exams, dental cleanings and annual vaccinations. These plans typically come with higher premiums.

    Preexisting Conditions

    • Most preexisting conditions are not covered by pet insurers, although some companies may cover problems like hip dysplasia if that condition is included from the beginning of the policy. This coverage also pads the premiums.
