Anti-Virus Software Comparison
Today's highly developed computer viruses require a heightened level of protection. The latest generation of anti-virus software is more effective than ever before. Most programs include email, file and web scanning, anti-spyware and 24/7 tech support.
-
History
-
Devious programmers began to create viruses that damaged or destroyed data. Computer viruses emerged in the 1980s. They were simple pranks, limited to self-reproduction. Then programmers began to create malware that manipulated and destroyed data. Anti-virus software was developed to fight these malicious viruses. The first anti-virus programs caused system slowdown, and required responses to security warnings. Today's anti-virus programs are more user-friendly.
Function
-
If you want to avoid system slowdown, anti-virus programs that have a reputation for "running light" include VIPRE, BitDefender, Eset Nod32, Kaspersky, Panda and Norton. If cost is a consideration, AVG has a free version that protects against most, but not all, malware. On the lower end of the price range, BitDefender, Norton and Panda provide the best protection. Eset Nod32 is three times the cost of these systems.
-
Considerations
-
VIPRE offers free malware removal if a virus gets through its defenses. Cleaning or replacing a hard drive can cost $250 or more. Norton features malware updates every three to 15 minutes, and Kaspersky has hourly updates, assuring that you are well protected.
