How Do I Become a Barber Who Uses a Straight Razor?

How Do I Become a Barber Who Uses a Straight Razor? thumbnail
Use a straight razor in your barber shop.

The two basic methods of shaving are using an electric razor or using a blade. Use a straight razor blade in your barber shop for the closest cut possible.

  1. Tools and Materials

    • Purchase a hollow-ground straight razor. The blade should be Sheffield steel or carbon steel, not stainless steel. The blade shouldn't have nicks and it should be tightly secured into the handle. You'll also need a stone made for sharpening razors, a leather strop and a hone with a grit of 8,000.

    Maintenance

    • Straight razors need to be stropped daily, both before and after they're used, using stropping paste. Hone the razor's edge four times per year.

    Technique

    • Use a shaving brush made from badger hair to apply shaving soap; don't use aerosol shaving creams. Shave against the grain. You can shave cowlicks twice, once each way. When you first start using a straight razor, go slowly and use a light touch, until you're used to this technique.
