Skin Disease in a Pug
Pugs are a toy breed of dog that is commonly found as pets in the United States. These dogs are full of personality and are very sturdy, making them great children’s pets. However, a few drawbacks can make owning a pug a challenge. These include a few health problems that include conditions of the skin.
-
Skin Fold Pyoderma
-
One of the most common skin conditions suffered by the pug is known as skin fold pyoderma, an infection of the skin caused by moisture being trapped in the folds around the eyes and nose. Treatment consists of cleaning these areas and administering antibiotics where applicable.
Allergic Dermatits
-
Allergic dermatitis is also common in pugs. Inhalant, food or flea allergies often cause Pugs to be itchy and prone to hair loss and red, irritated skin.
-
Demodectic Mange
-
Pugs' immune systems seem to lack the proper mechanism to keep the mite that causes outbreaks of demodectic mange under control. Treatment can be long, involved and sometimes ineffective.
Prevention/Solution
-
Pugs that are properly groomed and receive regular veterinary care can minimize the occurrence and severity of skin conditions, though some conditions such as demodectic mange are considered hereditary and hard to control.
Treatment
-
Most skin conditions in pugs are controlled through topical applications of medications and rarely require systemic drugs such as antibiotics or steroids.
