Job Description of a Compositor
Compositors, also known as desktop publishers, use computer software to produce a range of materials including books, brochures, magazines, newspapers and calendars.

Compositors create the graphics, images and overall design that accompany the text of the piece they with which they are working. It is their job to make it as attractive and appealing to the reader as possible.
Work Environment

Compositors work in pleasant offices for the most part. Working to deadlines is common as is a lot of time spent at the computer, meaning back and eyestrain can be a problem for some.

Qualifications

An associate degree or bachelor's degree in graphic arts, graphic communications or graphic design is the best way to get into this industry.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this industry is set to grow by 23 percent through 2018, which is higher than the national average for all jobs in the United States.

In 2008, the average salary for compositors was $36,600, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with the top 10 percent earning more than $59,210 a year.
