What Is Garnet Shellac?

Garnet shellac is type of finishing used in woodworking. It has a deep ruby/orange color.

  1. Shellac

    • Shellac is a kind of resin that is secreted by the female lac bug. The lac bug can be found on trees in India and Thailand. The resin is collected and dried so that it can be sold as flakes.

    Shellac Uses

    • Shellac is used as an all-natural primer, a sanding sealant, a tannin-blocker and odor-blocker, as well as a high-gloss varnish on materials such as wood.

    Using Garnet Shellac

    • In order to use garnet shellac, you must first dissolve the shellac flakes in alcohol to make liquid shellac. Then apply the shellac to the desired surface using a paint brush.

    Storing Garnet Shellac

    • The best way to store garnet shellac is in its dry, flake state. This will afford a virtually unlimited shelf life.

    Uses for Garnet Shellac

    • Garnet shellac is used as a high-gloss varnish in woodwork in order to give the finished product an antique look on cherry, mahogany and walnut wood. Its amber tone complements natural reds and warms blonde woods.
