What Is the Origin of Tissue Paper?

Tissue paper is named after the scientific reference to a thin layer of cells. It's used for gift wrapping and to catch a sneeze. While both are manufactured in thin sheets, facial tissue is soft and absorbent while wrapping tissue is smooth and holds its shape. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • The technique of making paper by grinding plants, then spreading and drying the pulp, was discovered in China about 2,000 years ago. The secret of using wood to make paper was revealed in the 1700s when someone noticed paper wasps chewing wood into pulp, and then using it to make their nests.

    Modern Manufacturing

    • Paper is still made from wood pulp. Some paper is made by hand, one sheet at a time. But most -- from newspaper, printing stock and wrapping paper to facial tissues and paper towels -- is manufactured in modern factories using trees from sustainable forests and recycled materials.

    Variety

    • White tissue paper was first used to wrap gifts in the early 1900s. Facial tissue was developed by Kimberly-Clark in the 1920s from wadding used in sanitary napkins. Kleenex is now a household word and synonymous with facial tissue. Both tissue paper and facial tissue come in a broad range of colors, patterns and sizes to meet every consumer whim -- a modern convenience that's nothing to sneeze at.
