Cutout Valentine Decorations

Cutout Valentine Decorations thumbnail
Cutout hearts can be made with one or more colors.

One of the first known Valentine's Day cutouts was a valentine made for Samuel Pepys by his wife in the year 1667. The cutout was made with paper and cut with scissors and had a note written inside. Cutouts have been favorite decorations since then and have been embellished in Victorian style or left plain. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Suitable Materials

    • There are not many materials needed to make a Valentine's Day cutout suitable for decorating. Stiff, colored paper like card stock or construction paper is needed and scissors are essential. Other than that, all other materials are used to embellish the valentine. Glitter, paint, crayons, markers, lace, ribbons or yarn all add more interest to a plain valentine.

    Basics

    • Heart shapes are the easiest cutout decoration to make. Fold a stiff piece of paper in half and draw half a heart onto the paper, with the fold being the middle of the heart. Cut the heart out with scissors and, when unfolded, the result is a perfect, symmetrical heart.

    Options

    • Hearts can be made in red, which symbolizes love, pink, representing kindness, and white, denoting purity. To make a garland of hearts, fold a strip of paper accordion-style and trace a heart that reaches both sides of the paper on the first fold. Cut out the heart on the bottom and the top but leave the sides uncut. When opened, you will have a string of hearts.

    Finishing Touches

    • String several hearts of different colors and sizes together and hang them from the ceiling. To make a wreath to put on the door, glue several cutout hearts around the edge of a paper plate with the center cut out. Use some cutout hearts for valentines and the rest for making other Valentine's Day decorations.
