Motorists driving in Idaho need to understand the state's driving laws regarding reporting an accident. Title 49 Chapter 13 of Idaho's driving laws details the reporting process.

Minor Accidents

Involved motorists must stop following any accident, but the extent of the damage determines how the accident is reported, according to state driving laws. If the damage is likely to cost less than $1,500 to repair, the motorists must exchange insurance and driver's license information, but they do not have to call the area authorities.

Major Accidents

Motorists must alert the local police department immediately if the accident results in an injury or death to any parties. If the accident happens outside a city, the sheriff or state police must be notified. Motorists also must report the accident if the property damage is likely to be more than $1,500.

Exception

If the driver is incapable of reporting the accident and there is another person in the vehicle, that person is responsible for reporting the accident. Idaho also allows each city to require that a separate traffic accident report be filed with the local police department.
