Jamestown's Settlement History

Jamestown was England's first permanent colony in America.

England founded Jamestown in 1607. It became the first permanent settlement in America. This original colony beat the Pilgrims' colonization by 13 years. All of the experiences of the early settlements helped to mold America's government, culture and language into what it is today.

Purpose of Voyage

The voyage's initial purpose was to expand England's empire, find another passage to the Orient and to spread the Anglican religion. King James I charted three ships---the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery---for this purpose.

Problems

Unfortunately, Jamestown was already the Powhatan Indians' home. Although they did establish trade with one another, there was tension between the two. Adding to the problems, disease and death spread quickly because of lack of food and polluted water.

Colonization

A local government was formed immediately, consisting of a council of seven men, including one who served as president. In 1610, King James I chartered another voyage to Jamestown. This led to a stronger government and the creation of small, successful industries. The government later transferred its seat to Williamsburg in 1699.
