Origin
- Created in the 1800s, jelly beans were inspired by Turkish delight candies, which were candy balls originally made with grape molasses and honey. In America, confectioners added sugar, molded them into bean shapes, and gave them their soft outer shell, creating the first jelly beans.
Politics
- Jelly beans were President Ronald Reagan's favorite candies. While serving as governor of California in 1967, he started eating jelly beans to soothe his cravings when he was trying to quit smoking. Reagan ordered 7,000 pounds of jelly beans to dole out at his 1981 presidential inauguration.
First Flavors
- Very cherry, green apple, grape, lemon and even cream soda, tangerine, root beer and licorice were the first jelly bean flavors created by the famous Jelly Belly jelly bean company in 1976.
