Why are Privacy Policies on Websites?

A website's privacy policy is where users can find out how their personal information is used.

A website's privacy policy is describes how their personal information will, or will not, be disseminated within the site owner's data storage or beyond. Privacy policies offer a variety of information but are generally developed to protect website owners and inform users of the policy.

Protect User Information

Privacy policies apply to every page that requires a website user to submit personal information. The privacy policy must indicate everything that will be done with the information and who will be viewing it.

Protect Children

If children are using a website, the privacy policy must give parents the option to authorize whether or not their child's information will be shared. Privacy policies also give information regarding whether or not they are able to monitor their children's use on the website.

Inform Users of Costs

If a user is required to enter credit card information, the privacy policy and terms of use must not only indicate how the information will be used, but must also notify the user of whether or not anything will be charged to the card under any circumstances. The privacy policy and terms of service are often where users find information on how long they have to cancel their membership before they are charged, or other hidden costs and rules.
