What Type of Video Format Do You Use to Put Videos on a Cell Phone? thumbnail
MP4 and 3GP are popular video formats for cell phone playback.

While the type of video formats used in each cell phone varies per model and manufacturer, one thing common to all videos placed in a cell phone is a relatively small file size. Most cell phones can accommodate only 32GB of space, which must be shared with other media and data files also stored in the cellphone.

  1. Types

    • Most cell phones recognize MP4 and 3GP video files. Although some can read and play only one type of video file, others can recognize additional formats, such as DIVX, MPEG-2, WMV, 3GP2, MOV, FLV and AVI. As of 2010, most new releases of high-end cell phones can accommodate both high-definition (HD) videos and standard-definition (SD) videos. MP4, 3GP and DIVX use smaller file sizes than other formats.

    Storage

    • Most cell phones can use external storage devices, such as microSD and Memory Stick Pro Duo. In such cases, you can store the video file in the cell phone's memory card. Otherwise, the video file will be stored in the phone memory. The maximum file size for the memory card and phone memory depends on the handset.

    Conversion

    • If a video file is not compatible with your cell phone, file-conversion software can change it to a recognizable format. Many freeware programs can convert a video file to multiple formats (see Resources).
