Entry-level GPS systems get more affordable every year. Advances in technology have trickled down the price range so that these entry-level units now include features once limited to more expensive models.

  1. Price

    • If affordability is key, refurbished units often provide the best value for your money. Magellan, Garmin, TomTom and most other major manufacturers offer refurbished and reconditioned versions of their entry-level models for as little as $60 or $70. Shop around, as often certain retailers will only sell refurbished models from one or two manufacturers.

    Screen

    • As the screen is often the most expensive element included in a GPS system, it is usually the place manufacturers will skimp in order to keep the unit affordable. If possible, go to a retail store and test the screens of units you're comparing. Check for clarity across the screen and fuzziness in the corners. Also check the audibility of the unit's speaking voices and as well as the unit's menu system to make sure it feels natural to you. There's nothing worse than getting lost and having trouble understanding your GPS.

    Features

    • Important features to watch for include text-to-speech functionality, audible navigation (especially if you're using the unit in the car), battery life, Bluetooth capability, and the number of points of interest that you can save into the unit's memory. Check the quality of the unit's casing as well. The more rugged, the better, especially if you're planning to purchase a mobile GPS unit.

    Warning

    • Should you decide to purchase a refurbished unit, be sure to check the manufacturer's warranty. While new units generally come with at least a one year warranty, refurbished models can come with warranties as short as 60 or 90 days. Also check to make sure that the unit comes with a free map update. Roads are always under construction, so having an up-to-date map can often mean the difference between a smooth trip and one hindered by detours.
