Behavior Management in the Preschool Classroom

Classroom management in preschool presents unique challenges.

Classroom management can be one of the most difficult parts of teaching, and dealing with behavior problems of preschool-aged children requires a unique approach and an understanding of child development.

  1. Avoid Behavior Problems

    • The easiest way to handle behavior problems in preschool-aged children is to avoid them in the first place. Of course this is not always possible, but you can make it more likely by keeping students constantly engaged in activities. Children should be spending almost all of their time in preschool using their bodies and hands rather than sitting and listening.

    Make Rules Clear

    • Be sure that children know and understand classroom rules. Have regular discussions with the children about the rules for the classroom and why they are important. Try to give children ownership of the rules.

    Quick Consequences

    • Preschool children do not have long attention spans. Consequences for behavior should be quick. Removal from classroom activity is the most effective consequence for this age group. Be careful not to make the removal too long. Also be cautious about denying playtime as a consequence. Often children who are discipline problems are children who need time to run and play.
