Goal-Setting for Fifth Graders

When a fifth grader sets a goal for herself, it allows the student a clear idea of what she wants to accomplish. Goal-setting gives the child something to work towards and creates good habits that will stick with her throughout her life.

  1. Why Set Goals

    • Setting goals helps children focus on what it is they want to achieve. Having clear priorities makes it easier to accomplish the stated task. Achieving goals helps boost a student's confidence and focus, improving performance in academics and in later life.

    Encouraging Goal Setting

    • Setting a goal is beneficial, although convincing a fifth grader of this can be difficult. Begin a discussion, letting him have his input, about what he wants to accomplish. Discourage the use of words like "can't," "don't," "never," "won't" and "no." Be positive, give the child samples and discuss possible outcomes of his desired goals.

    How to Set Goals

    • Have the fifth grader write down her goals. Include the goal, why the goal is important and the desired outcome. It is important to let the child have as much input as possible into setting her goals. Parents may make suggestions, especially if the goal is large. Help her break it down into many smaller goals. Encourage progress, but do not interfere too much or take over.

    Benefits

    • A child's self-confidence will increase as each of her goals are reached. Setting goals enables the child to see past possible conflicts and be motivated to achieve the goal. Children with goals are less likely to give up, and they have a sense of purpose and can interact more effectively in academic and home settings.

    Online Assistance

    • Several tools are available online to assist parents and children in their goal-setting efforts. These tools include charts, ladders and worksheets, as well as detailed advice on how to use them.
