What Is a Proxy Server Firewall?
A proxy server firewall means that a proxy server acts as a firewall, blocking websites from being accessed. Because a proxy server is placed between networks, it can monitor access to and from the network, like what a firewall does.
-
Definition
-
The proxy server sends requests to the Internet, like access to websites, in behalf of the network acting like a middle-man between network and the Internet. Anyone from outside the network sees only the proxy server and not the computers inside the network, protecting them from hacking and unauthorized access.
Proxy Server As Firewall
-
When a computer accesses a website, the proxy server checks if the website is allowed or not. If it is allowed, the proxy server accesses the website in behalf of the computer. If it is not allowed, the computer gets an error message, as if it were blocked, saying that access is denied.
-
Other Functions
-
A proxy server has the ability to store website information. Instead of repeatedly accessing websites from the Internet, the proxy server stores or caches the website so that the next time a user accesses the website, it simply feeds to the user what it has cached, loading the website faster for the user.
