New York City Parking Problems
Due to traffic congestion and the sheer number of vehicles in New York City at any given time, finding a parking spot close to your destination is difficult and time consuming, especially in Manattan. There are many parking rules carrying hefty fines if violated.

Street Parking

On Saturdays and week days Manhattan parking spots are in very short supply; on Sundays parking is generally free with more available spaces. Parking in the other boroughs--Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island--has fewer restrictions. Before extended parking in residential areas, though, chat with the locals about use of space.
Parking Signs

No parking, no stopping and no standing signs must be obeyed. No standing means only very short stops are allowed. Arrows indicate which area of the street the rules apply to. Alternate Side Parking signs limit parking to one side of the street while the other side is cleaned, usually twice a week.

Violations

Parking tickets are expensive in New York. The police are strict about issuing them, with only a 5-minute grace period after meter time limits expire. Parking in prohibited zones is a $100 fine with meter violations in Manhattan generally running $65.
Towing

Parking in a Tow Away Zone or in front of fire hydrants will result in towing. If your vehicle is not retrieved from the tow pound within 10 days, it can be sold at public auction.
