Identification
- Buffalo wings are deep-fried pieces of chicken that are then coated in a tangy sauce. Sauce is then added to complete them. Typically, there are additional sauces to dip the wings in such as ranch or blue cheese. Buffalo wings were invented in Buffalo, New York by Teressa and Dominic Bellissimo in 1964 at The Anchor Bar. The name from the city stuck with the food.
Significance
- Buffalo wings are one of the most identifiable American food items. They are commonly associated with football and watching sports. Several popular restaurant franchises based around buffalo wings have been launched such as Buffalo Wild Wings.
Fun Fact
- Building on its reputationas the birthplace of Buffalo wings, Buffalo has hosted the National Buffalo Wing Festival every year since 2002. In 2010, more than 70,000 people attended and half a million wings were consumed.
