Hot water boilers are heated by either gas, coal, oil and sometimes even solar energy. Also, heat is distributed in different ways--gravity flow, pumped system and baseboard convection system.
Considerations

Hot water boilers vary in cost, depending on what sort of energy is used to fuel them. If you are using coal or oil, you will also need to pay for delivery of the fuel and you run the risk of running out.

If you own a hot water heater, you should drain the water periodically. Water that has been sitting in the boiler for too long can leave minerals that make it difficult for the heat to move through the pipes.
