High definition progressive scan television sets can truly enhance home theaters.

HDTV is the new buzzword of the electronics market, with thousands of products being released. However, most stores commonly mislabel their new, high-end TV sets as HDTV when they are actually "HDTV-ready."

  1. What is HDTV?

    • HDTV refers to the technology allowing newer televisions to display at much higher resolutions than previous technology could manage. This is attained using progressive scan technology, in which every "line" in the image is drawn individually. The most common HDTV format is 720p.

    Difference Between HDTV-Ready and HDTV

    • HDTV-Ready means the TV can potentially broadcast at high definition, but requires an external tuner box -- in essence, it's a high-quality screen without any tuning capability. HDTV simply means that this tuning box or other apparatus is already built in to the TV set.

    HDTV-Ready vs. HDTV

    • Deciding between an HDTV-Ready and HDTV screen boils down to cost and externality. An HDTV-Ready set will require an external tuner box to connect to a broadcasting station, which will increase clutter and also use up an HDMI plug. An HDTV screen will not require this, but will be significantly more expensive. There is little to no difference in performance.
