OSHA Jib Crane Requirements

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established certain safety requirements for using cranes, including jib cranes. These requirements minimize the risk of serious injuries from the use of crane.

  1. Definition

    • A jib crane is also referred to as a wall crane. This is a crane that has a jib, with or without a trolley. It is supported by a side wall, or line of building columns. It is a traveling crane and works with a runway attached to the support structure.

    Wind Indicators and Rail Clamps

    • OSHA requires that outdoor storage bridges be provided with automatic rail clamps. In addition, a wind indicator must be provided. This indicator will alert the operator at a pre-determined velocity.

    Clearance Between Cranes

    • If two runways are parallel with no wall or structure to separate them, then adequate clearance must be maintained between them, according to OSHA's requirements.
