Radar Detector Buyer Guide
The purpose of a radar detector is to detect the presence of police and help drivers avoid speeding tickets. Various types of radar detectors are available, and choosing the correct type is not always straightforward for novice buyers.
-
Wired Radar Detectors
-
Wired radar detectors are the traditional and most popular type of radar detector. They typically plug into a standard cigarette-lighter socket and affix to the windshield with suction cups. Wired radar detectors typically can detect all radar bands.
Wireless Radar Detectors
-
Wireless radar detectors are battery-operated and have a shorter range--typically 30 percent shorter--than their wired counterparts. They switch on and off very quickly to conserve the life of their batteries.
-
Concealed Radar Detectors
-
Concealed radar detectors--radar detectors that are fitted permanently to a vehicle in an inconspicuous position--are less likely to be seen by thieves or law enforcement officers. They are more expensive than other types of radar detectors.
