What Education Do You Need to Be a Web Designer?

Web designers and developers are the computer programmers that create and maintain websites on the Internet. Unlike many other careers, there's no officially required amount of education to find a Web design job.

Formal Education

Many Web designers go to college and get at least a bachelor's degree in computer science. While it will look good on your resume, a degree isn't specifically required if you've got the knowledge and experience to back up your skills.

Educational Background

Frequently, even without going to college, Web designers know multiple computer languages and have learned how to program and develop computer applications and software. The first step should be to learn HTML, a computer language commonly used in Web page development. Consider learning to use a graphics creation program such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Adobe Illustrator.

Current Knowledge

While some careers don't require continual education, the technology used to effectively build websites and design pages on the Internet is constantly changing and advancing. Due to the ever-changing nature of the field, Web designers must continually educate themselves when new Web-development technology comes out to keep from falling behind on their trade.
