What Type of Equipment Do You Need to Maintain a Koi Pond? thumbnail
Koi exist in many colors.

Koi (goldfish) ponds originated in China at least 2,500 years ago. The koi carp is a cool-water species that can hibernate over winter in deep pools. Further development of koi, Nishikigoi, were created by the Japanese. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Liner

    • The liner of the koi pond must be durable, especially in areas where the ground freezes. Rigid molded liners are made for shallow ponds. Soft moldable liners are best for deep ponds and will shape to fit contours as water is added. Ensure the liner has passed the EPA fresh-water organism toxicity test.

    Pump

    • A pump is required to circulate oxygen and nutrients in the pond and to supply water to the filter. Consider the volume of your pond when choosing a pump. The correct pump should cycle the volume of the pond in one hour.

    Filter

    • Beneficial bacteria colonize filters, which helps to break down toxic waste products. Several varieties of filters exist. Choosing a filter depends on the budget and amount of maintenance time available for the pond.

    Pond Depth

    • Koi ponds should measure at a minimum 72 inches long and have a depth of 45 inches. To minimize predation from birds and mammals, the pond should be at least 3 feet deep. Check your local frost depth to calculate the depth of the pond for hibernating fish.

    Skimmer

    • Skimmers are used to remove debris, such as leaves, from the pond surface. A door on the skimmer prevents fish from becoming trapped within.
