GPS systems can be useful when traveling or hiking.

A global positioning system (GPS) helps a person navigate in unfamiliar territory. This is true whether in an urban setting or a deep forest. Travelers may want to use a different type of GPS for each one of these environments.

Cars

Many new cars now come equipped with global positioning systems, according to the website Useful GPS. Drivers whose vehicles do not have this equipment will find portable systems considerably easier to use than early models that were designed for military use. These units are also more affordable than the first systems manufactured.

Hiking

GPS systems used for hiking do not generally give the locations of streets. Instead, they usually tell a user where she is in the woods and can help her navigate back to familiar territory. These units are usually more lightweight and smaller than models designed for vehicles. Many portable GPS units are also waterproof, and are generally battery-operated.

Voice Guided

Many GPS units have an option to receive directions via a computer voice. This is typically used in car models so a driver will not become distracted while looking at a computer screen. Some more expensive models may also be able to receive voice commands from the user.
