The Farm Bureau was started in 1911 by John Barron. Barron worked as a representative for farmers with the assistance of the New York Chamber of Commerce.

The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 provided funding to help the organization grow. Money was available for country agents to assist with farming practice improvements.
